Tonsillitis
|
Inflammation of the tonsils is known as Tonsillitis. It is characterized by pain, redness and swelling of the tonsils. It may cause fever and pain in the throat while swallowing.

- Inflammation of the tonsils may result from bacterial or viral infections.
- Bacterias: Tonsillitis is often caused by Group A streptococcal bacteria, resulting in strep throat.
- Virus: Tonsillitis may be caused by viruses such as the Epstein-Barr virus (cause of glandular fever) or the Coxsackie virus.
- Tonsillitis caused by a superinfection of spirochaeta and treponema, is called Vincent's angina or Plaut-Vincent angina.

There are 3 types of tonsillitis:
- Acute tonsillitis:
It may be caused by Bacterial or Viral infection.
- Subacute tonsillitis:
Infection of the tonsils lasting from 3 weeks to 3 months is termed as Subacute tonsillitis.
- Chronic tonsillitis:
Here there the episodes of tonsillitis last for long periods of time when not treated. Most often are caused by bacterial infections.
- There is fever that can go up to 103 -104 degrees Fahrenheit along with malaise, rawness in the throat.
- Inability to swallow solid food, with severe pain in the throat.
- The tonsils are intensely congested either on one side or both the sides.
- Patches on the tonsils yellow in appearance discrete at first, later coalescent separating easily without leaving a bleeding surface.
- Tonsillar gland in the neck is enlarged and tender to touch.
- Referred pain to ear on the affected side of the tonsil.
- There is congestion and edema of the surrounding tissues.
- Peritonsillitis or Peritonsillar abcess
- Acute Suppurative cervical lymphadenitis
- Acute gangrenous tonsillitis
- Edema of the larynx
- Septicemia
- Rest in bed
- Gargling with warm slat water
