Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is a developmental disorder that is largely neurological in nature and it affects 3- 5 % of the population. ADHD is characterized by a persistent pattern of inattention and/or hyperactivity-impulsivity. ADHD is most commonly diagnosed in children but over the past decade, it has also been increasingly diagnosed in adults. It is believed that around 60% of children diagnosed with ADHD retain the disorder as adults. Boys are more commonly affected with ADHD as compared to girls and the ratio is 3:1.
The exact cause of ADHD remains unknown. The genetic linkage associated with this disorder is still being explored and in many cases, children with ADHD often have some family member suffering from this disorder. While the majority of ADHD cases are believed to be genetic in nature, roughly about 1/5 of all ADHD cases are thought to be acquired after conception due to brain injury caused by either toxins or physical trauma prenatally or postnatally. Certain areas of the brain have been found to be comparatively smaller in children with ADHD. Certain chemical changes in the brain have also been detected in children with ADHD.
Risk factors for developing ADHD include:
- Premature delivery
- Very low birth weight
- Injury to the brain during birth
- Smoking during pregnancy
ADHD is a behavioural disorder in which children act without thinking, they become hyperactive and face trouble in focusing on anything in particular. Their attention gets deviated very easily. Children with ADHD understand what is expected from them but they are unable to focus in order to complete the task assigned to them. Such features persist for long and they impair a child's ability to function socially, academically and at home. A noteworthy point is that children suffering from ADHD are not behaving in this manner on purpose; rather they have difficulty in controlling themselves and hence exhibit such features. The good news is that with proper treatment, children with ADHD can learn to successfully manage their symptoms and lead a healthy life.
Attention deficit hyperactivity disorders (ADHD) can be classified into 3 basic groups:
