62 year old male patient consulted us with the following complaints:
- Ever-increasing levels of serum creatinine and serum cholesterol
- Hypertension
- Increased frequency of urination at night
- Edema feet
- Giddiness
- Difficulty and stiffness in walking with cracking of the knee joints
- Pain in multiple joints
All these complaints were making him worried and it was a cause of mental torture, he said.
Besides the above problem, he had severe Cervical Spondylitis. The pain was continuous and radiating to the right hand. There was decreased sensation on the right side of the body. He felt nervous and didn't feel like talking when the pain was there.
The patient came from a big joint family. There were 8 brothers and 1 sister in all. Due to poor financial condition of the house, he had to stay with his elder brother (22 years elder to him) for educational purpose. He stayed with him till 23 years of age and didn't get motherly or fatherly love in childhood. There were differences with his sister-in-law but he used to do things the way she liked; it was not a pleasant situation but he didn't want to hurt anybody. Loneliness was constantly there and he never enjoyed his childhood and wept whenever he was alone.
This went on for 12 years; he completed his graduation and took up studying law but was unable to complete it. Then he took up a job and was liked very much by his colleagues. His friends who used to work for the workers' union asked him to join them as he would be able to help the workers to solve their problems. He was very honest and disciplined- he used to do his office work and then the union work. Thus, he was under constant tension for 15 years. But he gave it a tough fight. He said he never gave wrong advice to the staff so that he might gain financially. The company also gave him a promotion but he refused to take it because people would have thought that he was influenced by the authorities and so he got promoted. Due to this, he had to suffer major financial losses.
A very emotional person, he would get hurt easily if someone said something wrong. Yet, he would not react; would keep all things in mind and think of them. His whole body would tremble when he would be angry.
Being very sympathetic, he could not see others suffer; he would go and help those people who genuinely needed help. He liked music and felt better in general after listening to it. Fear of going out alone was a prominent symptom noted during the case. His sleep was disturbed and he had lot of anxious dreams.
The patient was prescribed Mag-Sulph based on the above history. His first follow up was after 4 weeks; he was remarkably better. His frequency of urine at night was reduced by 50%. He did not feel as tired as before and was feeling much refreshed. His creatinine level had not increased further though it was still on the higher side. His sleep was sound and was not disturbed by dreams. He was again seen after 4 months; the serum creatinine which was increasing previously had stabilized now and so was his lipid profile. Over a period of time, his renal function tests showed improvement, his edema reduced and his joint pains were under control. His reports have been summarized below:
