| 32 year old male patient reported to the clinic with complaints of pain in the lower back since 2 years. Details of the complaints were as follows:
- The pain was more intense on the right side of the back
- Pulling sensation in the legs while walking
- Worsening of pain from bending forward, pressure, sitting
- He would feel better by movement, standing, lying down, walking and bending backwards
There was history of an automobile accident in the past after which he had become unconscious for sometime. Subsequent to this episode, he had started getting frequent headaches for which his physician had put him on Tegretol. The patient also had complaints of retrosternal burning.
During the history, he remarked about being hated by his father right since childhood. Since he was not interested in pursuing the career of his father's choice, he was often beaten up. In order to marry the girl of his choice, he had to separate from his family because they did not approve her. All this had created lot of stress in addition to the existing financial stress that he already had.
Brooding about being separate from his parents and weeping about the same was a frequent phenomenon for him. He would also feel bad about the fact that his parents were staying alone in their old age.
Being sensitive by nature, he would be emotionally hurt easily. Music would be very relaxing for him when he would be stressed. Helping others came very naturally to him.
When angry, he would say something in an impulse and found it difficult to forgive anybody.
On the physical front, he had a normal appetite with liking for sweets and salty foods. His sleep would be sound.
There was past history of malaria. His father had Diabetes and Hypertension, paternal grandmother had throat cancer and paternal aunt had breast cancer.
Based on the above history, he was prescribed Natrum mur. 200 for his backache. A week later, he reported with improvement in the pain. Treatment was continued on similar lines until he reported one day with acute backache after playing cricket. This time, the pain was better by bending backwards. He was given Dioscorea 30. His pain improved and he was much better over the period of next few weeks. The pulling sensation in his legs while walking also gradually disappeared. After a few weeks, when all his complaints had subsided completely, his treatment was discontinued and he was asked to report to us in case he developed any other complaints in future.
